Today Jobs come back to Apple Inc. and we thought to pay our tribute by uploading a scene from MacHEADS the movie. After the “trouble years” of the 90s, Steve Jobs returns to the company that fired him. in 1998 Jobs presents the first iMac resurrecting Apple Computer and leading the company for the next 10 years. In September 2009 Jobs, once again, returns to Apple (inc.) after a long battle with cancer.

The Mac community is truly incredible, I’ve received an email , from Dmitriy “pharaon” Remezov, from Russia. He asked me where he could get Russian subtitles for MacHEADS, unfortunetaly because we are an small independent production team, we couldn’t find the funds to do subtitles in different languages. Dima wasn’t deterred, he made an incredible effort and translate the film and also went into the sound studio and added voice over! So now dear macheads friends in Russia you can get your MacHEADS in Russian! We will work on the DVD special edition for Russia, and will add Dima’s work.  As soon as it goes out we will have updates on the website.

Yesterday SGVMUG and SCMF Eclectic Cinema screened MacHEADS,  it seems like it was a fun experience,  a copy of the MacHeads DVD was given, and laptop bag and a keyboard cover. 5o people attended and we are extremely happy to have had the chance to screen it. Some interesting reactions from the viewers. Special thanks to BustAGroove for organizing the event.

Yes, I was one of those geeks clamoring for an IPhone although I was a T-Mobile subscriber and swooped up the 1st gen IPhone after I researched for weeks on how-to jailbreak it. I was back for more torture ;) as a legit AT&T customer waiting in a long line to buy the 2nd gen (3G) IPhone. Yes, I’m a Mac FANgal, but some of those peeps in the MacHeads movie were straight up over and beyond fanatical. It was cool to see where it all began with a vision from 2 college dropouts following their their dreams to bring us technology “for the rest of us”. I found the movie to be more educational/historical than entertaining. I like how Shawn kept the whole Apple hoopla in perspective — love the community and the people, not the corporation. After the movie, I stayed behind & won 3 out of 6 raffle prizes: a copy of the MacHeads DVD, laptop bag and a keyboard cover. Thanks for coming out on a weeknight to check out this movie & for sharing your opinions & questions.

What fun! It was so much more relevant to watch this documentary with a Mac Users Group. It really put it into context for me. Thanks Maria for sharing this unique experience with us. It was great! (and thanks for sitting with me too).

We have talked about “MacHeads,” The Movie in the past. But this article talks about the background on how it was made.

The article is called: “Doc captures depths of Mac lust.”

According to the article, the turning point in the movie is the change in the user group community. Where it says: “MUGs, or Macintosh user groups, provided new users with an opportunity to speak with folk who could expand their digital horizons by suggesting fixes, tricks or software. And while these groups still exist, the Internet has taken a major bite out of their support base. Many of those participating in MUGs today are the old guard – the die-hard Mac user 1.0, who remember a day when 64K RAM was a big deal. In an era where answers and support are a few mouse clicks away, it’s proving difficult for MUGs and other user groups to attract new blood.”

“A huge amount of this DVD revolves around the history of the Mac, presented in such a way as to make it both interesting and informative. From the early days to the present world of “i” programs and machines. From the brink of extinction, to the incredibly successful machine that is loved worldwide, the story is here.”

MacHEADS by breun.

Just saw this brilliant picture on Flickr, it came from Utrecht, in The Netherlands. See more from breun flickr page.

It took us 4 months, better late than never. We had a blast with MacHEADS premiere hosted by IDG Macworld Expo, Apple world Conference. Here is a small sample of that special screening.

Matt Dentler's BlogindieWIRE Blog Network

We’ve seen a lot of really great success stories with our films over the last few months, but something that keeps stunning me is the holding power of our January documentary release, MacHEADS. This is a documentary that screened at zero festivals, never played a theater, never broadcast on televsion, and received zero mainstream reviews, but it does star a very popular brand: Apple. The documentary, by Kobi and Ron Shely, has been on iTunes for nearly four months and still sits firmly in the Top 10 documentary rentals chart today. Granted, it’s about the Mac computer culture that flourishes on a place like iTunes, but considering its company is documentaries such as American Teen, Religulous, and Man On Wire, that’s pretty awesome.

You are invited to the Australian Premiere of “MacHeads” at Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley Campus. Bookings are essential.

Saturday, 30 May 10.45am arrival for an 11.00am start.

About the invitation
Researchers from Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the University of Western Australia (UWA) are screening the movie “MacHeads” for free at ECU Mount Lawley on Saturday 30 May at 11.00am. The requirement? You have to be a Macintosh fan to get in.

UWA Professor Jamie Murphy and ECU’s Regional Marketing Manager Nathalie Collins are screening the Western Australian premier of the film MacHeads. The film had its world premiere at the MacWorld Conference in San Francisco in January 2009. The film is being screened as part of research ECU and UWA are conducting into Brand Communities, Brand Cults and Customer Evangelists. “We hope to survey the audience after the screening and get their views on the phenomenon, which is the subject of the documentary,” said Nathalie. MacHead is a film about Apple-obsessed consumers who travel internationally for Apple Events and derive some of their identity from the use of the product.

The film also looks at Macintosh User Groups, where “MacHeads” gather in a Brand-oriented community online and in person. Nathalie has been a member of the WA Macintosh User Group (WAMUG) for almost ten years. She was a founding member of the Geraldton Macintosh User Group (GMUG) and is using MacHeads research as part of her exploration about products which customers obsess, travel and blog about.

Professor Murphy conducts Online Marketing research and is the  lead professor for the Google Online Marketing Challenge, an annual global competition for over 10,000 higher education students in 60  countries. Although not a Macintosh user, he is the lead academic on the project. “I can maintain some objectivity about the product, as Nathalie is a hard core MacHead and has been for about 20 years.” Nathalie and Prof Murphy have collaborated on research of wine, motorcycles and Brand Communities. Their Customer Evangelists research has been presented at Australian marketing conferences.

Prof Murphy and Nathalie have permission from the film producer for limited public screenings and to use the film in research, teaching and learning. Bookings are essential.

What caught my attention was that both articles are focusing on the MUG culture, the age groups and the film’s social study. I used google translation which sucks, but got a pretty good idea and this article is really interesting. If Alex is reading this maybe you can try and translate it to English?

Google translation - “This article is inspired by the movie MacHEADs (link to iTunes), a documentary telling the story of the fans and followers of so-called “cult of Apple”. The film tells a story and the early days of a movement, when Mac has only just appeared, and the difficult period of the 90s, and what happens now.

We are working closely with Deborah Shadovitz to bring MacHEADS to Users Groups, after all MacHEADS is about you and mostly about the role Mac users group have in the development of the Mac community.MUG screenings pose a bit of logistic problem since we are not located in the US. Deborah had helped us with 3 successful events and we are planning more.

Here are some reactions to the screenings we’ve had, it’s taken from Deborah’s blog

Tonight I brought the documentary MacHEADS The Movie to the Macintosh User Group in Northridge (MacValley.com).

A couple of the attendees had already seen it at the Macworld Expo World Premiere. They commented that they liked it better the second time. Lliked it even better, that is. I asked why. One said he saw a lot more this time. The next person agreed, adding that there is so much in it.

Tonight was my 3rd time seeing it. Last night at the WOCMUG screening was my 2nd time. I thought the same thing last night. And tonight I got to know the people in it even more, and knew what I wanted to pay particular attention to this time. I’ve decided that’s why it’s great to have the video.

It’s exciting for me to watch the viewer’s reactions as well. I’m going to be taking the movie to a few more groups in SoCal.”

Read recent reviews by the press:

“The world may have gone gaga over the Oscars this week, but we at AMW can only wonder at the integrity of a process that had no Best Picture recognition for MacHEADS, the self-described ‘fanboy documentary’ that is set to do for Mac fanboy-ism what ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ did for the slums of India”
Macworld Australia

“Ultimately, this is a story of lost innocence. Even as the community celebrated the return of Steve Jobs - their prodigal son and savior - it was being undermined by the Web (which obviated the need for local user groups) and a grown-up company that no longer required a fanatical user base to achieve financial success”
FORTUNE/CNN Money

“MacHEADS illustrates, with insight and with humor, the extremes take which the fan base take their devotion”
Jerusalem Post

* * * *  (Four Stars) “MacHEADS is a fun film with more screwballs than a Mighty Mouse factory, vintage Mac clips and an insight into a community that appears to be on the verge of extinction…There’s a great documentary to be made about the history of Apple, its sudden rise, near death and resurrection. MacHEADS is not it, but its focus on the weird world of the devotee makes it a wonderful social document in the history of people’s computing”
Macworld Magazine UK

* * * * (Four Apples) “”Overall, MacHEADS is a great and fun documentary that any Apple fanboy or girl will enjoy. If you’ve ever watched a keynote, attended a Macworld or stood in line to buy something with an Apple logo on it then you’ll have a lot of fun with this documentary”
Appletell.com

“In character sketches, MacHEADS document Macloytes’ adoration for Apple hardware - and their sometimes loathing for Windows PCs - and offers many an eye widening moment… MacHEADS show Apples fandom’s rise to influence, largely via Macintosh User Groups, and fall from favor as the Internet and Apple’s corporate status make MUGs irrelevant at least to Apple.”
